He was a handsome lad.
The first day he was born
The mountains of Thrace had stooped so that
the rejoicing wheat appears on the shoulders of the land ;
The mountains of Thrace had stooped and spitted
on his head , his bosom , on his crying ;
Greeks with awesome armrests came
And lift him towards the swaddling clothes of the north wind...
Then the days run, competed in stone,
They hopped around astride on young mares
Then the morning Strymon Rivers flowed
Till the gypsy-anemones jingled everywhere
And the sea shepherds arrived from the ends of the earth
to guide the jib's herds there
Where a sea cave was breathing deeply,
Where a large stone was sighing!
He was a strong lad;
In the nights hugged by the bitter orange girls
He besmirched the great costumes of the stars
He had so much love in his guts that
He was drinking in his wine the whole earth's flavor
Starting afterwards a dance with all the brides poplars
Until the dawn to hear him and to throw light over his hair.
The dawn that was finding him with open arms
on the tiny twigs' saddle scratching the sun
Painting flowers
Or even singing with affection a serene lullaby
to the small owls which had been kept awake...
Ah what a strong thyme his breathing
What a pride's map his bare chest
Where freedom and sea were bursting!
He was a brave lad.
With his dim-gold buttons and his pistol,
With the air of a man in his walking,
And with his helmet - a shining target
(They came so easily straight into his mind
Which never knew the evil)
