Invictus

Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the Pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds, and shall find, me unafraid.

Invictus(Ανίκητος)

Μέσα απ' τη νύχτα που γύρω μου άρχει,
Μαύρη σαν σύραγγα από Πόλο σε Πόλο,
Φχαριστώ όποιον θεό βοηθός θα υπάρχει
Για της ανίκητης της ψυχής μου το ρόλο.

Σ' αυτό το δίχτυ περιστάσεων μπλεγμένος
Δεν μόρφασα καν, όχι να ουρλιάξω .
Από την τύχη σφυροκοπημένος 
η κεφαλή μου μες στο αίμα, μα δε θα σκύψω.

Πέρα απ' τον τόπο οργής και δακρύων
που δεν υφαίνει παρά σκιών τη φρίκη ,
Ακόμη και με απειλή χρόνων κρύων
ό,τι έρθει άφοβο με ήβρε ή θα με βρίσκει.

Ασήμαντο πόσο στενή είναι η θύρα,
Πόσο βαριά στο γραφτό η ποινή μου.
Είμαι ο κυρίαρχος στη δικιά μου μοίρα :
Ο καπετάνιος στην ψυχή μου.

ΣΤΟΝ ΑΝΤΩΝΗ

Εκείνο το σούρουπο, φίλε μου,
είπες πως θες να πετάξεις
στον ουρανό για πάντα.
Ποτέ δεν ξαναοδήγησα...
Είχε ένα υπέροχο ηλιοβασίλεμα
ροζ και μαβιά σύννεφα
στο δρόμο με τα δέντρα,
αφού περάσαμε το γιοφύρι των νυμφών...
Χορεύαμε πάντα μαζί τόσο ωραία!
Ένιωθες ότι οδηγούσες αεροπλάνο, είπες.
Ένιωθες ότι πήγαινες σε πανηγύρι
στα σύννεφα
κι είχες μαζί σου, όσους αγαπούσες.
Το προηγούμενο βράδυ γελούσαμε, φίλε μου,
τσουγκρίζαμε ποτήρια στην υγειά της ζωής.
Εμείς οι δυο και τώρα να πεθάνουμε, ζήσαμε, είπες.
Ο πρώτος μου γιος έχει τ' όνομά σου...
Εκείνο το σούρουπο ήμουν κουρασμένη,
μα πήρες τηλέφωνο και δε γίνεται,
ντύσου, σήμερα θα βγούμε όλοι μαζί, είπες...
Μόλις είχα πάρει το δίπλωμα, μα τιμόνι από τότε
στα χέρια μου δεν ξαναέπιασα...
Εκείνο το βράδυ δε γυρίσαμε πίσω.
Το ολοκαίνουργιο δερμάτινο παλτό μου
γεμάτο αίματα
κι εσύ φίλε μου, ξαπλωμένος στον έρημο δρόμο
μ' ένα κινητό στο χέρι.
Καλούσες βοήθεια...
Με φώναζες, πλησίασα.
Με κοίταξες στα μάτια, μ' αποχαιρέτησες,
μου είπες " Να προσέχετε τα παιδιά..."
Κι ύστερα το βλέμμα σου χάθηκε.
Στο νοσοκομείο άκουσα ένα γιατρό να φωνάζει.
"Ο ένας κατέληξε..."
Πέρασαν κοντά είκοσι χρόνια, φίλε μου.
Χορεύουμε ωστόσο ακόμα συχνά μαζί τα βράδυα.
Δε σ' έχασα ποτέ.

I could be so strong
to bear so many
ups and downs

I will suddenly crash
like an overloaded machine
